Zermatt

Switzerland

Renowned as one of the world's greatest ski resorts, Zermatt's appeal is as much about the car-free village and mountain restaurant experience as it is about the quality of the skiing and terrain. Beautiful hotels offer breathtaking views of the Matterhorn towering over the village.

The Town

Zermatt is well-renowned as one of the world's best winter resorts, combining excellent, mixed-ability skiing on high, snow-sure slopes with breathtakingly beautiful scenery, a traditional village and some of the world's best altitude dining and good nightlife. Wandering around the car-free village is an adventure in itself with narrow streets and buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. The bustling high street is alive with a wide array of shops, bars and restaurants, so you'll be sure to find something which takes your fancy.

The Skiing

Three lift stations, the Gornergrat Railway, the Sunnegga Funicular, and the Furi Gondola, wing skiers away across the mountain. From satisfying reds and undulating blues to acres of off piste, Zermatt has it all. The resort is home to a network of 200km of pistes across three sections - Sunnegga-Bauherd-Rothorn, Gornergrat-Stockhorn and Trockener Steg-Schwarzsee, with top stations over 3,000m.

About 20 per cent of runs are classified black, and the usually-deserted Stockhorn section provides a good challenge and off-piste opportunities are limitless with a guide. Our clients love the 'White Hare' run which goes from the top of the 'Hohtalli cable car' down to 'Gant' dropping 1000m in height. It's a long run with an adrenaline-packed descent and also offers loads of fun twists and turns.

Highlights Of Zermatt

The Town

It's easy to keep busy in Zermatt without skiing at all. The central Matterhorn Museum covers village history, farming and mountaineering, and there's a free village tour that departs daily at 6pm from the Monte Rosa Hotel. There's even antique shops and galleries to browse and films including English showing at the Vernissage Cinema.

Explore the mountains

There are also 45 miles of winter walking tracks and snowshoeing opportunities within Zermatt's ski area, including lovely woodland trails away from the pistes. Many of the mountain restaurants are easily accessible on foot; the clusters at Findeln and Furi are especially popular with walkers. The glacier palace in the depths of the ice on the Klein Matterhorn is well worth a visit, with exquisite carvings of mountain, village and animals.

Gastronomy

As a world renowned resort, Zermatt offers a large range of dining choices at the height of culinary excellence including Chez Vrony, which at 2100 metres altitude offers stunning visuals of the Matterhorn and even better food and wine selections. This cosy Restaurant Les Marmottes restaurant uses local meat and produce from the farm, to create unique and exquisite specialities.

Rest and Relaxation

Open to all whether you fancy a relaxing bathe in the Jacuzzi, dip in the swimming pool, or a trip to the hammam or sauna - Zermatt offers everything. Here you will find lasting recuperation after a demanding day in the mountains. We particularly recommend the spa at the Mont Cervin Palace as a haven of exercise, relaxation, fun and tranquillity. Enjoy the clean mountain air while relaxing in the warm waters of the outdoor pool.
